NIKKOR AF-S 58/1.4G

NIKKOR AF-S 58/1.4G
Mandatory visit to DigiExpo fair today. Got my hands on the coming new Nikkor 58mm lens and quickly tested it. This is interesting lens as its meant to deliver best possible image quality for the standard (50mm or so) focal length. Sharpness and contrast should be optimal aperture fully open and very pleasing looking bokeh coming from rounded 9-blade diaphragm.

Lens is bigger than the 50mm/1.4G but not heavy and feels really solid extension on a camera. I tested it with both the D700 (without grip) and D4. Focus speed feels snappier than with 50mm/1.4G. Distortions, CA and vignetting should be also well controlled. This all comes with higher price compared to AF-S 50mm/1.4G or 1.8G Nikkors. Lens is going to be sold for a suggested retail price of around 1800€. It can be hard to justify the premium price as AF-D 50mm/f1.8 can be bought for under 100€ and is still great lens for almost similar focal lenght and aperture. But this 58mm lens is for photographers who want best possible Nikkor for their lens arsenal.

NIKKOR AF-S 58/1.4G vs NIKKOR AF-S 50/1.4G
Focal length in 58mm is little bit longer than the normally used 50mm but that offers good perspective for portrait photos. These two samples were taken aperture full open. 58mm on left side and 50mm on right side. Focus is maybe little bit off on the 58mm photo but there are some visible differences in the background out of focus area.

Vilhelm, one of the founders of Vuokrakamera as test subject for these portrait shots. He told they will have the lens for rental as soon as it comes available.
