Two setups

Sometimes you need or want to use only one light, and sometimes lot more. First setup what I did in this shoot was with basic four lights setup. Key light from beauty dish, fill from softbox, rim light and one light for background.

When you guide people to be photographed to look to the light, they usually tend to search and look to the biggest and brightest source of light. That happened also in this setup, where Alexandra first looked to the 3x4' softbox which was the biggest light by area size but only serving as fill light. So when you give directions to people to be photographed, don't think they will automatically know which is the key light to look at. And even better way is just refer left/right or show with your hand the direction where to turn, look and so on.

Probably most often asked equipment related question from non photographers is: "What is that gray card and why I need to hold it?"

Grids are great for controlling the light and also giving nice feathered fall off for e.g. background lights. Control freak photographers would like to use even grid on grids. If you now got business idea which makes you filthy rich, send me a postcard.

In between changing the lighting setups and outfits there was good moment to also try few shots using one light with reflective white umbrella and black bookend as part of the photo where model could lean. Black wall served also as double purpose by darkening the shadows. Profoto AcuteB can be set to lower power setting (9 Ws) than Profoto Compacts (37.5 Ws), which allowed photos from this setup to be taken at F2.8 without need to use any ND gels/filters.
