PocketWizard PLUS III
Got new PocketWizard PLUS III radiotrigger. Refreshing to notice that new version is cheaper and in most areas even better than older PLUS II. It also comes with all the needed cables to attach it to studio flashes or speedlights which is big difference compared to old models where the cables had to be purchased separately.
I tested this as transmitter yesterday and it worked flawlessly in studio with Compact 600 R (with built in receiver) and outdoors when using PLUS II as receivers (with Pro-7B & Nikon SB-80DX). I liked the smaller profile in new version and lit LCD that indicates also the battery status. Long pressing mode button will power on/off the unit. There is few seconds delay when unit is powered which is little bit annoying as the old Plus II were ready to be used immediately once the power switch was turned on.
Firmware can be updated through USB-port. Same port can be also used to power the wizard (like in picture with Nokia's portable charger). With this combination I noticed strange bug in PW III. When powered through USB, I couldn't change the mode from wizard anymore. Has anyone else noticed same?
G-Wiz 2x case for two PLUS II/III or Multimax and size comparison of Plus II & III. I have never had major problems with PLUS II's poking antenna when trigger is attacted to camera hotshoe, but during transportation the easily bent antenna been sometimes challenging. New zipped & padded G-Wiz case feels good solution to securely carry 2 Plus II/III or Multimax wizards. Previously I have been using plastic boxes or just the PW II cardboard package for same.
Update: after using the PW Plus III as transmitter in recent shoots and taking over 1000 frames without a single misfire (black frame) I can say it to be as reliable or even better than older PW Plus II.
